| Bikes Not Bombs |
[Apr. 2nd, 2007|11:21 am] |
(Crossposted from Tinctoris)
In early June I'm going to be riding my bicycle in a fundraising ride to support Bikes Not Bombs. They do some good work in providing bikes & knowhow to places that really can use them.
If anyone is interested in sponsoring my ride, please get in touch with me at this address, and I'll give you some more information. Any amount is appreciated, and anything over $35 gives you a membership to Bikes Not Bombs.
Also, for the the entirety of April, if anyone buys a copy of Travelog from me directly, I'll donate all profits to Bikes Not Bombs. Let me know if you'd like one: the cost is $11.99, shipping included and $8 of that will go to Bikes Not Bombs. |

| Gym Shades and Zen Running |
[Mar. 29th, 2007|11:46 am] |
Those who regard the mundane as a hindrance to practice only understand that in the mundane, nothing is sacred. What they haven’t understood, is that in sacredness, nothing is mundane.
– Dogen
One of the first things I notice about the gym is how many of the people there don't want to be at the gym. Magazines are being read, iPods listened to, TV watched. If none of that suits, there's the greatest hits of Top 40 playing on the overhead speakers. I don't think it's that bad of a place, but I think I can see why many people don't agree; everyone has their own reason and method for doing something. The overall effect, however, is something like Hades with sweatbands.
Part of the Zen body practice is to pay very close attention to the body, and particular the hara which is more or less the "center" of the body a bit below the navel – also perfect for contemplation. So running counter to a lot of the other people there, it's taking me a lot of energy to stay at the gym and not go floating off into one of the dozen escape chutes. In some ways that's more challenging than the exercise itself.
I'm sticking to the treadmills and elliptical trainers for the present; I can get some good work in without putting too much strain on my joints. I'm not as out of shape as I thought; I can run a 7:03 mile (though probably not 2), and an easy 8:00. From a strictly physical standpoint, the feeling is amazing. I'd almost forgotten how good running feels.
The gym is segregated into the "cardio theater" and the weight area. I'm getting a few personal training sessions to learn what I'm doing and how to do it in a way that makes sense, so I'll cross over the breach soon. |

Dernit, Youth of Today! This just in:

Oh Boston Globe, when will you learn? The full article is actually kind of informative, but between fomenting respect and "sex makes young people feel good," I'm losing my faith. |

| Will Compose for Money |

| | We Want Your Soul-Adam Freeland-Now & Them | ] | I don't really need to support myself with music, which is good because I'm so far in the hole I'm starting to feel the magma core of the Earth. But what I do need it to show something of a cash inflow so that my claims of being a "freelance musician" hold some water. I'm okay with losing money right, now, but between giving away everything I've done in the past year and accepting the past few commissions for free, I'm not making anything at all. My accountant is sad.
So, I'm pimping myself out for ultra low prices. Here's how:
1. I still have some stock of Travelog here at the house. I'll send it to you, anywhere in the world, for $10 paypal. It's a great CD! You can always buy it on iTunes too, but this is cheaper.
2. I'll do covers for you of any song you want, for $20. I can't guarantee quality, but I'll work on them and you will be amused. If you want to donate more, I'll spent more time tweaking.
3. I'll compose you some real music, with notes on paper and everything. I'm pretty good at this, and have written stuff from solo works all the way up to pieces for full orchestra. How much I charge depends on what you want, but it'll be super cheap. thoroughbass has kindly commissioned a piece for harpsichord and recorder. I'll also compose original electronic music if you want.
4. If you have any other reasonable request that involves music, let me know.
Help me lose less! |

Why yes, yes I do believe it is.
